View Full Version : USB 2.0 support w/o SP2

Hopefully someone can help me with this, i'd really appreciat it. I
have no USB 2.0 support with the first release of Win XP. I tried
installing Service Pack 2 and it didn't work for me: probably
something firewall related, couldn't see any user accounts, couldn't
launch help, couldn't get various services up and running. In short,
a typical microsoft disaster.

I have a gigabyte K8 motherboard running an AMD 64 +3000. The
motherboard manual says that I should get the drivers for the onboard
usb 2.0 from microsoft. The only way to do this seems to be by
installing service pack 2. Given that SP2 doesn't work, that doesn't
seem to be an option for me.

Is there any way to get a driver for the USB controller without
installing SP2? I have looked around the microsoft website as well as
the internet generally, with no luck.

Any advice appreciated

Hi,

Have you tried installing the chipset driver for your mother board? That
usually contains the drivers for your onboard USB.

Another point.

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe ver 2.0 requires SP1 before you can even install the
latest M/B drivers.. It complains about not having USB 2.0 support unless
you do. I have never tried to continue after seeing this message as I
require 2.0 support.

It used to be that the first thing you did after installing the operating
system was to install the motherboard drivers. Things change. (-:

I've installed all the drivers for the m/b except for the RAID
controller which i don't as of yet have the hardware to use. USB 1.0
works fine but there is no high speed support. If only they gave the
drivers on the CD I wouldn't have to mess with this disastrous service
pack.

It's so frustrating to see microsoft charge so much for such junk. I
wish they'd just concentrate on building a stable operating system
rather than trying to include all sorts of bells and whistles. Fix
the basics first.

I suppose I will try the classic windows troubleshooting solution:
reinstall the o/s from scratch and go straight to SP2 before I install
any other software. Maybe there is a software conflict here. I
suppose SP1 is no longer available for download anymore.

All this trouble for a simple driver...

The drivers are also included in SP1. (or SP1a). If you get a download
of the full version, slipstream it into your present one, then do a
repair install with the result you should pick them up. There is also a
later set, I think the ones that went into SP2, which you can download
at http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603
