View Full Version : msmsgs auto appears in XP firewall

The "msmsgs" appears in the firewall services section
automatically and is always enabled. If the entry is
deleted or disabled it re-appears automatically. I assume
this is related to MSN messenger but I need confirmation;
especially in this current worm ridden world. In one
situation on an XP home based PC, I found 10 entries that
keep coming back after selection with various TCP and UDP
settings.

If this is worm or spyware related any specific info
would be appriciated.

Hello CIS,

I believe it's MSN Messenger. You can check out this website for more
information:

Greetings CIS,

The "msmsgs" mapping is Windows Messenger automatically setting its required ports.
Everytime Windows Messenger begins, it should add two of these ports and then remove them
when it is closed. If the PC wasn't properly shut down, or Windows Messenger crashed, then
these ports will remain and you'll need to manually clean them out (there's no harm in doing
so, although you'll need to restart Windows Messenger if you want to use a voice/video
conversation).

Jonathan I am having problem of not getting
The "msmsgs" mapping is Windows Messenger automatically
setting its required ports.
Everytime Windows Messenger begins, it should add two of
these ports and then remove them
when it is closed. When I bring up Windows messenger & I
look for the ports in setting they are not there, this is
why I am not able to use voice. Can you tell me how I can
fix this problem please.

Carmine

Hi Carmine,

Usually reintalling your network card (assuming you're using a NIC with your optonline
service) can "force" this to work again. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Communications, Network Connections, right-click your network connection and choose Disable.
Next, click Start, right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab,
and then click the Device Manager button. Click the '+' next to Network adapters, then
right-click your network card, and choose Uninstall. Then, after confirming to uninstall,
click the Action menu, and choose Scan for hardware changes. Your network adapter should
then be reinstalled.

After this, reboot and see if there are any change. If it still doesn't work, click Start,
then Run, then type the following:
netsh int ip reset reset.txt
and click OK.

You'll see a screen briefly, which will then disappear. After this, restart once again and
see if it works.

do you have NAV? If so, uncheck the scanning of messages. I had a lot of
trouble with WM that every time that I deleted it arose from its grave and
messed up my internet connection. But since I unchecked the scanning of
messages via Messenger in Norton AntiVirus everything worked smoothly.

I hope this is to the point.

Erik.
