View Full Version : sharing slow at one directory

I have three computers networked through a switch. They run 98SE and ME and
XP. All the drives on all the computers are shared and all are fully
accessible. The problem is when I try to open ME's My Documents, XP freezes
up for a couple of minutes. 98SE can access ME's My Documents instantly.

If RAM figures in, 98SE has 190MB, ME has 320MB, and XP has 256MB.

Is there a setting I need to fix? Is XP trying to use special XP features
on My Documents? The XP Networking wizard was run on 98SE and ME systems.

On the XP machine: Start/Run regedit ENTER.

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Remote
Computer\NameSpace\

Delete this subkey {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

Thank you, Doug. The delay is down to about 10 seconds now. It still makes
no sense to me. I noticed each of the directories at the root of ME's
documents drive (E:) had a different view in XP. I set them all to Document
as opposed to music and video and pictures. The other directories open
immediately. 98SE opens all of them immediately. Somehow the fact that My
Documents has 16,009 files in 1,394 folders must figure in.

Other things to try:

1. In the same place in the registry, delete this subkey:

{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}

2. Turn off offline files on the XP mcahine.

3. On the XP machine, go to the Properties for the network addapter and
experiment with manually setting duplex or half duplex.

This problem is common for Win2k and XP machines browsing to Win9x machines.
Usually the registry edits solve it.
