View Full Version : SP2's effect on Older Games

This is both a question and possibly a solution.
I find I can no longer run my classic "Space Invaders". My question is; why
not? At the beginning of the game it prompts you to install "Direct X 6", or
something like that. Once this is done, an error message pops up.
Does anyone know how to get around this?
On the solution side (which I have not yet tried) (but sounds amazing
simple), someone suggested installing a SECOND OPERATING SYSTEM! You say WHAT?
In other words take your O/S disk, or your old Windows 98 disk, and try
installing somewhere on your system; maybe a different partition (maybe it
doesn't even matter). When you start up, Windows should ask which one you
want to use (I know it WILL do this). So for the usual stuff you click on
WinXP with all the Updates including Service Pack 2; but if you want to run
older software like Space Invaders - you click on the other O/S, be it WinXP
with NO updates or an older version like '98.
You smart guys out there think about this and get back to us DWEEBS! Thanks
in advance!

Multibooting to different operating systems (or instances of the same
one) has been around a long time. You could have MS-DOS, Windows 3.11,
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux,
and some more operatings systems all on the computer at the same time -
but you only get to load one of them. If you want multiple operating
systems running on your host at the same time, go investigate Virtual PC
or VMware. However, since you would be sharing the same hardware
amongst multiple and concurrently running operating systems, expect a
significant performance loss even when only one is being used and the
others mostly sit idle.

Dual Booting Win98 and WinXP is one solution. But installing Win98
after Xp has been installed is a little more trickier than 98 and then xp.
Have you tried Compatibilty mode. Rt click on the games .exe file and select
properties>Compatiblity mode. Look in C:\Program Files for the games folder.
