I tried uninstalling Messenger in the Add/Remove Windows
Components area, but nothing was removed. I can't delete
the Messenger folder. How do I get rid of it?

Take a look at Doug Knox's Website at this link for detailed instructions on
how to disable your Windows Messenger.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger.htm

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Follow the steps and the pictures that the website has and you shouldn't
have anymore problems. Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of
the messenger features such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN
Messenger if you're using that.

Greetings Brian,

You can remove Windows Messenger (the "old one"), but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run Windows Messenger
when Windows starts'. This won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of
your way, and allow MSN Messenger to work properly.

However, since you've already done the usual disabling and that hasn't worked, do you have
Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to
Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior (even if
you're going to fully uninstall it below, follow this step or your uninstallation will not be
successful). To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

If you really want to remove Windows Messenger, you can do so by doing the following -- close
down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in
(copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,
