I keep getting this message when I connect to the
internet ".NET Messenger Service Staff says:
You are running a version of messenger that requires an
immediate security update. Please visit
http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete
the update."

Well, I don't want the update. I don't use this service.
How do I disable this so they stop sending me this
message? I tried doing this,

Click Start->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

But I still get the message...now what?

Greetings Linda,

What you disabled was the "Messenger Service" -- not Windows Messenger (which runs of the
..NET Messenger Service) -- although these all sound the same, they are all completely
different.

To stop this from happening, simply stop Windows Messenger from loading. To do so, open up
the main Windows Messenger window (click Start, then All Programs, then Windows Messenger if
you can't find it), click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab, uncheck 'Run
this program when Windows starts' and click OK. You can then close Windows Messenger
(right-click its icon in the notification area/system tray, by the clock and choose Exit).
