Hi all,
Is there any way or known method to troubleshoot Windows
Messenger issues (log file, event log, etc). Also, is
there a way to uninstall completely WIndows Messenger? I
plan to re-install later, but want to be sure that
*every* file gets deleted before reinstalling.

Thanks!
Oswaldo.

Greetings Oswaldo,

There is no Windows Messenger log to troubleshoot Windows Messenger issues. However, yes,
you can completely remove Windows Messenger.

For Windows Messenger 4.x (what comes with Windows XP), close down Messenger if it's running
(right
click the messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click
the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

For Windows Messenger 5, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon
in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
and then click OK.

Thanks Jonathan,
I uninstalled every messenger in my machine and
reinstalled and cannot get rid of the issue.

I uninstalled MSN8, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger,
then rebooted and reinstalled Windows Messenger.

When launching Windows Messenger, the process msmsgs.exe
just takes all the CPU and I need to cancel it. There is
no way it finishes to load and work.

If I try with MSN Messenger, it will load and I can chat,
but cannot use any collaboration (Audio/Video feature)
without hanging the process msnmsgr.exe; the same happens
if I ever run Audio Setup Wizard.

Any ideas??? How could I check if the RTC components are
ok, or if there is something corrupt in some place?

Bests!

Hi Oswaldo,

Do you happen to have DirectX 9 installed (it may have been installed with a game or demo as
well)? To check, click Start, then Run, enter "dxdiag" and click OK. In the first window
that appears, you'll see "DirectX version" listed, if it's 9, then upgrade to DirectX 9b:

If your DirectX version is listed as 8.1, or 9.0a (or b) then this isn't the problem.
