How can I stop MSN Messenger from starting up when using Hotmail?

Greetings Stuart,

Unfortunately you can't, this functionality is built-into Internet Explorer and Messenger.

Hi, the linkage microsoft have embedded is worse...

I got msn 4.7 and outlook express 6.0 presinstalled on my
new machine, taking Microsoft guidance when I started msn
4.7, I applied the 'critical' patches and upgraded to msn
6.

Now whenever I open outlook express, msn 4.7 opens, so I
unchecked to option in Outlook express, made no
difference, deleted the program for msn4.7. made no odds.

each time I open outlok express Bill Gates opens MSN 4.7,
leaving me wide open to whatever world cares to throw
through the open door!!!

Scary

perhaps someone knows the solution?

Hi Ian,

You can actually stop this from happening. Just close Outlook Express, then download and run
this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After running/importing, Outlook Express will no longer open Windows Messenger 4.7.

Thanks for the info....I just went and uninstalled MSN Messenger since I
usually use the Messenger that came with XP. I don't like app's starting on
thier own...found if you uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs ya still
gotta delete some files and folder that uninstall leaves behind and also
some reg keys in the registry!

Hi Stuart,

This is true -- it does leave things behind (in case you reinstall it).
