I am having UNC path problems with an XP computer running SP2 on a domain
network. I can type the UNC path at the run line command “\\\panter” and I
get access to the file server. This method uses WINS to resolve the name.
Here is the problem the WINS is going to be turned off shortly and we will
have to use the UNC path “\\panther.xyu.edu”. This method uses DNS. The
method using the DNS approach will not work on my system for some reason. I
decided to remove SP2 and it works fine! Here is the catch it works on my
laptop with SP2 installed UGH. I have rebuild this computer and have done
everything possible even tried a different network card. Does anyone know
how to fix this issue?

Does the name resolve otherwise. ie can you ping panther.xyu.edu ?

How about navigating by ip address ie \\192.168.0.1
