I just did a fresh install of Windows XP from a slipstreamed SP2 disc.
I'm checking windows update now and it says there are no critidcal
updates available. Have there been any critical updates yet since SP2
was released? I'm pretty sure I saw one before, but not positive. Just
making sure.

There should be at least three (IIRC)
try Belarc advisor - www.belarc.com - which will tell you what's installed,
and how well
Also check out your Installation history from the Windows Update page -
which will tell you what Windows thinks is installed already

See KB articles http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;834707
(cumulative Security for IE) and 885894 (stops responding if you try to
install an update)
either is critical to the system, but the IE one would be a good idea.
There is also one for Office, to be found on Office Update and one for
..NET framework

Which ones? Are you sure you aren't including non-critical updates
in your count? E.g. 834707 is the only one which shows up
using the Security Bulletin Search tool but only if you *uncheck* Critical
for a search. According to the MS04-038 bulletin 834707 is only
"Important" for our platform (expand Executive Summary)
so this makes sense even if the label it has when you do
that search is incorrect. (It is still labeled Critical when it is displayed.)

I also just did a clean install and no criticals come up. When SP/2 first
came out I made a slipstreamed CD and did a clean install and there were
several critical updates then. Not sure how many. Being there aren't now
months later, there be a MS problem.
I will check back in a day or two and see if there are any. I just checked
with a buddy of mine he already has XP SP/2 installed from his slipstreamed
CD. He went to Windows Updates since he hasn't for awhile and there was one
Critical. As a test for me he did a clean install tonight and went to
Windows Updates and sure enough there were no Critical Updates.

Wow. I just now got notification for the KB834707 update. And now it
is considered critical again. I wish Microsoft would make up their
mind.

Thanks. I just checked and there is there for me also. I had made a post
about doing a clean install and when going to windows updates there were
zero updates. Now there is one.
On another machine I have XP on and hadn't updated for a while and don't use
auto updates I went to Windows Updates the same day I checked for the
machine that I just did a clean install on. The one that already XP on it
showed some criticals. I forget how many now. But, the clean install machine
had none.
A couple friends of mine tested for me doing a clean install since they have
muti boot systems and sure enough, they had zero critical updates when they
checked. We all had software and driver updates but no criticals.

It had some problems when it first came out. Perhaps it has been fixed.

It does not apply to XP with SP2 and the resulting IE6 SP2. What does
the Help - About in IE say?
