I have Windows XP and a dial up modem. When using voice
chat in Windows Messenger(4.7) the other party can barely
hear me. I have run Audio Tuning Wizard...and even with
the microphone volume control as high as it can go, the
microphone only just registers. I can't find a way to up
the sound on my microphone.
The other party, who has Windows 98, Messenger 5.0 and
also a dial up modem, has the problem of hearing his own
voice in his headphones. We have talked previously with
no problems on earlier versions of Windows messenger.
Please help us, I thank you in advance.
Kathy.

Hi Kathy,

Is the sound built in to your motherboard, as opposed to your PC having a
soundcard? If it is built in, there is a good chance it is using a C-Media
controller. Windows Update quite frequently updates the drivers for the
C-Media controller which can sometimes result in loss of input on the
microphone.

If you do have a C-Media controller, you can reset the input volume level by
bringing up the Mixer, by right clicking on the Mixer icon in the
notification area, then click on advanced button in the bottom left of the
mixer,
select the 'options' tab and you will see 'Enable Microphone Booster'. If it
is
unticked, tick it. If it is already ticked, un-tick it, click Ok to save,
click the exit button, go back in and
re-tick it. Then try the a/v wizard again.

If it makes no difference, then possibly your motherboard may need a
firmware upgrade, but only if it has a C-media controller.

Hope that helps
Mike
