in newest version of msn messenger is there a way to get rid of the side bar
which has the icons for alerts, travel, traffic ...etc.? Also, is it
possible to get rid of the ad at the bottom of the main window?

Thanks! KMc

Tools, Options, Privacy. Tick the box at the buttom "This is a shared
computer so don't display my tabs". Should do exactly what you want (as it
did for me)

That's the ticket! Thanks.

Any way to get rid of their ad banner at the bottom?

Install messenger Plus (http://www.msgplus.net). It does other funky stuff
as well as letting you turn of the banner. When installing it'll ask you if
you want the sponsor, the answer to this question is NOOOOO! :) Enjoy
