View Full Version : AV Choice ??

Bill
November 24th 04, 01:11 PM
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 - AVG 6(free) - Spybot S&D - AdAware -
SpywareBlaster - CWShredder - Sygate Personal Firewall - machine works fine.

I upgraded to AVG 7(free) - machine keeps re-booting - not working fine

Research had me try:
complete uninstall of AVG 6 prior to installation - including manually
deleting all folders etc. - not installing email scanning option - praying
to the AV Gods

Further research, including AVG Forum, indicates there MAY be a problem with
AVG 7 and Sygate Personal Firewall or Roxio EZ CD Creator (which I have),
and/or the AV Gods.

SO - I am interested in people's opinion on another good AV program since
AVG 6 will be un-supported after 12/31/04 and AV 7 appears to be
not-me-friendly.

TIA,

Bill

I've got AVG 7 Free on several Virtual PC's and runs very well.
Version 7 seems to do a better job of def updates. Sounds like
you've got an interaction issue. Always a pain when a program
doesn't play well with others.
I'm currently evaluating alternate Anti-Virus packages. Alternate
being other than Symantec or McAfee. Right now CA's e-Trust
7.0 is my "Current" choice. Small memory footprint, quick and
does a good job of def updating.
You can get a 1-Year free by downloading e-Trust from the MS
Partner Pack. After install, you can upgrade to the recent 7.0
version.
I used to always recommend Norton Internet Security 200x, as
having a Suite with Anti-Virus/Firewall seems like a good idea.
Unfortunately, it seems like no single product will handle the 3
main areas of concern (Viruses, Firewall & SpyWare). I just
read an article that indicates that SpyBot & AdAware's detection
& removal %'s aren't that good (40%+).
So for now it's still a multi-faceted approach and it's almost
impossible to recommend a setup that works for everybody.
For reference, check out the following for a good compendium of
products and tools, plus some very good "White Paper" info:

I use avast! Antivirus on both my work and home machines, and I find that it
protects better than other products I've used; avast! has detected things
AVG, McAfee, and even Symantec Corporate edition did not. Not sure how much
the boss paid for Symantec Corporate, but I'm sure it must be a kick in the
pants that the whole IT staff is using avast!. =)

You are absolutely right, "Alias", as you might have found access to
Avast! on the web site of its Prague located producer <www.alwil.com>,
too;-)

Roy <who is happy with Avast! also as it is available with a UI in

Hey there Bill,

I use Computer Associates eTrust Anti-Virus software on my pc. The
application is certified by ICSA to catch 100% of the known viruses in the
wild. Takes 2MB of memory to run and takes roughly 16MB of disk space to
use. I used to be very big on Symantec's products, however I have found that
CA does just as good of a job. It's still 39.95 poer subscription, but I
find that it's worth the money.

For more information on ICSA Certifications, you can go to
http://www.icsalabs.com/

SpywareBlaster - CWShredder - Roxio EZ CD Creator v5 - ZA free without
problems.

I also use Sygate PE v5.5 build 2710 in a different setup (does not have the
other s/w).

What does Event Viewer show for errors?

As a test, disconnect from the Internet, disable auto-loading of Sygate (or
uninstall Sygate & install ZA free).

BTW, IMO, Sygate free is a superior product to ZA free.

CZ,

I removed Sygate PE 5.6 build 2808 - the machine continues the re-boot
cycle - a blue screen comes up momentarily, but not long enough for me to
read anything on it. Until now I have been very happy with AVG and
Sygate, which does not appear to be the varmint here. I may take Roxio EZ 6
off the machine and try that set up. Thank God for Go Back.

Thanks to all for the replies - you are the best - somehow this will all
work out.

Bill

I took Roxio EZ CD CReator 6 off - no more problems - EXCEPT - no more CD
Creator - this is not good. At least I know what the problem is now and
maybe shortly a fix will be provided. I need the CD Creator so I'll be "Go
Back"ing to where I was.

I don't like it as much as AVG. It's got a slick look, but it is
intrusive and requires a yearly registration.

I agree - I don't like it as much as AVG either - I am back to AVG 6 and
hoping they fix the problems with version 7 soon
