View Full Version : SFC /SCANNOW and SP2

My XP Home system has been resetting itself recently, sometimes with the
shutdown window, other times like the reset button was pressed.

VET, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D report no problems.
I am currently running SFC. It would be *really* nice if it would tell me
when it restores anything.

Question: Do I need to re-apply SP2 after SFC finishes?

Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim

When the PC resets itself, do you see any error messages at all? Is the
reset a shutdown or a reboot? Have a look in the Event Viewer so see if any
entries there may point towards the problem.

Hi Will

Thanks for the quick reply. Sometimes it's like 'shutdown -r -t 60' has
been entered, and sometimes like a hardware reset. No error messages are
displayed.

It's my wife's machine. I have not seen the resets myself. To my knowlege
she has not seen any error messages.

Also, the computer hung on 'shutdown -s -t 5' this evening.

I will not have access to the computer for about 12 hours now. I will check
the Event Viewer then.

Jim

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, under Startup and
recovery Settings un-check Automatically restart. When the problem
happens you will see the error on screen.

I'd also do a Start, Run, CHKDSK /F to fix file system problems.

No you do not need to re-apply SP2 after SFC runs.

Steve
