View Full Version : Removing SP2 from Windows XP Pro

I just purchased a Dell computer with Windows XP Pro OS w/SP2 installed. I
program that we want to use is not compatible with SP2. Dell did not have
the option of purchasing the computer without it installed.
Now I can not get it uninstalled. Is there a way of uninstalling an OEM
version of SP2?
Thank you

Hi Lonnie
If XP SP2 was already installed on the PC when you purchased it, you won't
be able to uninstall it and still have a usable machine. It would mean
having to purchase an earlier version of XP, then reformatting and
installing that version. Do you which version of XP the program is
compatible with?

Not really. Dell and the large (and small) OEM's use images to put the OS
on the machine. The image would have SP2 integrated, not applied after a
base OS image. So there would be no option or capability to uninstall SP2.
You might try contacting Dell support, explain the problem, and see if they
have available a pre-SP2 image or restore disk for your make. Based on my
knowledge of how Dell works and the fact that they keep limited inventories
in stock, I doubt that you will be successful going that route. If not,
then another option would be to purchase a pre-SP2 version of Windows XP
and do a clean install (deleting completely the current XP installation).

Dell does not have any other OS but XP Home/Pro w/SP2. That option is out.
The program will work with either XP Pro SP1 or 2000 Pro. Could there be any
problem with installing 2000 Pro on this laptop? I wouldn't think so but any
warning would be appreciated.
Also is there a good place to purchase a new laptop with either XP Pro SP1
or 2000 Pro on it?
Thank you

As the laptop was designed with XP in mind, you would be better to install
XP with SP1 rather than 2000 Pro. You would need to check with the various
manufacturer's of the internal hardware components to see if there were
Windows 2000 drivers available for the components if you wanted to go with
2000.

The big OEM's will have already set everything for SP2. You would have to
check with some smaller manufacturer's or PC stores to see if they still
have some stock with only SP1. I'm not aware of any off the top of my
head, but I also haven't been shopping for a laptop lately.

Sorry, no. Your only recourse would be to buy a pre-SP2 version
and install it.
What is the program that's not compatible with SP2? Are you sure
it's not compatible?

The program is Wonderware InTouch. Wonderware is not saying that they are
compatible yet, and we cannot use SP2 until they approve.
To all thanks for the help

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that program, but perhaps someone
else here is, and can provide info on running it with XP.

Have you actually tried it with SP2 to see if it will work? We initially
recieved all sorts of ifnormation about a lot of the software we use and
possible "may work differently" warnings with SP2 and none of them have
had any problems what so ever under XP SP2.

Looks like they now have a configuration utility for SP2.
