This is a good thing, but it has nothing to do with whether MS is good
or evil. Or do you think they're doing this for altruistic reasons?

You didn't read the story or note that "evil" is in quotes.
MS is replacing pirated software with legal media.
And I'll be happy when I win the lottery.

Here's a flash for you:

Microsoft is in business to make money. It's called
Capitalism.

Deal with it.

If you had a brain and were able to discern context, you would have
realized that this thread began when the reactionary MS apologist Mr.
Macklin suggested by his initial subject line that MS was doing
something out of the goodness of its corporate heart. That's clearly
not the case, and as I said in an earlier post, it's not necessarily a
sign of good or evil, just a corporation being a corporation.
BTW, being a Capitalist doesn't mean one has to be selfish and
greedy--that's Conservatism.

They are evil because they are trying to get their users to rat
out the computer shops or individuals from which they bought their
computers. The Nazis did the same thing -- they encouraged the
Hitler Youth to accuse their parents, relatives, neighbors and
friends of any infractions of the rules the Nazis set down to be
followed. During the witch craze of the 16th century, children
were encouraged to accuse neighbors of witchcraft, so that those
persons could be arrested, tortured and executed. A program that
seeks with bribes to make people point a finger at their neighbors
can't be good.

You have a very warped sense of reality to compare what Microsoft is
doing to what the Nazis and other similar evil groups did.

First the people selling the computers are selling stolen (pirated)
Windows.
There is nothing legal about their distribution.
How does that equate with the evils you mention?
Second, Microsoft is offering to give legal licenses in exchange for
stolen property.
There is no obligation on Microsoft's part to do that.
How does Microsoft giving genuine for pirated/stolen equate to the
evils you mention?
Do you condone the actions of those shops who deliberately sell
pirated/stolen software and thus steal from their customers?

The shops that knowingly install pirated Windows are thieves and need
to be identified.
Illegal copies of Windows are one of the causes of computer security
issues in the last few years.
Another option Microsoft has is to allow all to be patched, many but
not all can now get the Service Packs.
Microsoft is now pursuing the source.

I suppose if you are one of those shops, you could call the buyer you
defrauded a "rat", but the buyer probably believes you a thief...and
rightfully so.

Those shops are thieves, no less.
They should be treated as thieves.
Honest people lose much every year from thieves of all kinds.
Why do you feel a thief's actions should be protected?
Why do you not care about those the thief defrauded?
