Hi I have two drives drive c which has the boot.ini and drive
d,e,f,g,h,i which has winxp on partition D. I am replacing my first
hard drive C with a new drive which will have 4 partitions on it. I
want to re-install windows xp on this drive but keep my present
windows xp intact until I have time to completely configure my new
installation and all software. I remember seeing that when installing
winxp it says that it has detected a previous version on my system,
and asks do I want to repair or install a new fresh install. If I
choose new install to my new hard disk will it erase or reformat my
existing d,e,f,g,h,i,drive? If it leaves it as is, will the boot.ini
file be created so I can boot from both versions? If my method will
not work what is the best way to keep my present install which is
working, and have a new install on my hard disk. In case anybody asks
why I want to re-install if it is working, why not not just do an
image..., is because the present vesion is an upgrade from win 98,
changed two mother boards since therefore I was suggested to start
over for faster performance, and get rid of hundred of installs and
uninstalls who left traces of files and registry entries.
Also I will be partiotioning my new hard disk as follows c: 10G for
winxp, D: for programs 40G e: for documents 40G and the rest 70G for
downloads mp3 etc.
My question is what is he best way to transfer documents and settings
to my e drive so I can have all documents and data files on same drive
for easier backups. When installing windows it does't ask where to
install docs&settings. Can I just cut and copy it the documents and
settings over to my e drive and then use tweakui to change where docs
& settings is located?
Sorry for the long post
Thanks in advance for replies.

Depending on how long you wish to do it for (i.e. beyond the grace period)
you will require a second licence. The licence is for one installation per
computer (i.e. dual booting XP with the same licence of XP is not allowed).

Does your Bios support choosing which hard drive to boot?
Where are the current program files located?

The boot files for the current XP need to be on C:.
The current XP needs to be on D:.

Replace the C: drive.
Do a Repair install (?) to rebuild the boot files.
Install XP to C:, creating a dual boot.

If you replace the one partition C: drive with four partitions, then D: can
be the second partition on the first drive or the first partition on the
second drive.

Create a second partition of 70GB on C: drive.
Move old XP to second partition on C: drive.
Make sure the second partition on C: drive becomes the D: drive.
Edit the boot.ini file to reflect the old XP move.
Also use this partition for downloads mp3 etc.

Create a third partition of 40GB on C: drive.
This should be the E: drive.
If the old program files where on E:, move them to the new E:.
Install new and old programs to new XP on E: drive. Install using the same
folder names.

Create a fourth partition of 40GB on C: drive.
This should be the F: drive.
Put documents on F: drive.

When you are finished using the old XP, remove it from D: and edit the
boot.ini file.

I understand but I would need a month to get everything configured to
my liking. And yes I will remove the original version after that.
