split mpeg4

hi everyone!

I want to split an incoming mpeg4 stream so that I can serialise it as
individual files. there seem to be about 200 utilities that you can download
that will do this but I can't locate any code that will give me a clue of
how to do it myself.

any assistance would be much appreciated
