I've been trying to connect a mouse to my packard bell iGO 2441 w windows XP.
Nothing happens, I have also tried with my mp3 player, nothing. I know both
units are working correctly on other computers. Have tried restarting several
times, and checked the properties for the USB-ports.

Very grateful for any suggestions/help

I'm not familiar with that particular computer. Is it a laptop or a
desktop? Did the usb ports ever work? If they did, what changed?

You could try to reinstall the USB drives using the Device Manager...just go to
Update driver and let it find one...

Also make certain that your USB ports are turned on in the BIOS...
