The recommended method of doing this is using the "Files And Settings
Transfer Wizard" (FAST). If you have Pro / Server2k3, the "User State
Migration Tool" (USMT) is another option. Aumha.org has some good tutorials
on how to use these programs.
A third option is using Ntbackup. This utility has been greatly improved
since the Win9x/NT days, and can now recognise a wider range of backup
devices.
Using a Direct file backup of your profile is not recommended (particularly
across computers) because the user profile is tailored to your specific
computer hardware (unless you have a Domain environment). That, and the SIDs
are impossible to replicate.
