View Full Version : Scanner Undetected

Following my upgrade to XP I have downloaded new drivers from Mustek. Problem
is my imaging software (MGI Photosuite) tells me the 'scanner is not
connected, check cable'. Of course the scanner is connected and if I go into
Scanners and Cameras in the control panel it varifies that the scanner is
connected and working!
I have loaded another imaging software programme to see if the same happens.
Yes it does, same message 'scanner not connected'. What is this all about?

Additional info. The upgrade was ME to XP, the scanner is Mustek 1200ub.

Barny,
If your scanner is not as new as some you may have the same problem that I
had with my Umax Astra. This works OK with XP but has a few foibles. It
does not handle user accounts well and it must not be turned on when
starting the computer. If it is turned on before the computer boots, XP
installs its XP drivers and then the correct drivers do not work, I get
"Scanner is not connected, check cable". The scanner appears under Sanners
and Cameras in this case.

However if I leave the scanner off until completion of bootup and sign on, I
can then turn on the scanner and use its own software without XP getting its
own stuff in the way. In this case the scanner does not appear in the
Scanners and Cameras section.

I cannot say if this will work for you but it might be worth a try, when
scanner drivers conflict then software will likely not see the device and
operation can be "flaky".
Richard

Thanks Richard.
Only problem there is that the scanner has no power button. It is powered
thro the usb connection!

The drivers for ME won't work for XP. They are incorrect.

To install this thing, you first need to completely remove the drivers
for ME.

Next, disconnect the scanner from it's USB port.

Install the XP drivers - you'll have to obtain them from the Mustkek
Website.

AFTER (and this is important!) you install the software, THEN and only
then should you plug the scanner back into the USB port. It will
finish the installation and you'll be off to the races.

I know it will work as I've been using my 1200 UB for some time.
Where people screw up is when they plug in the scanner then try to
install the drivers. That's backwards and screws it up every time.

See NobodyMan's response as well, you do not have to plug in the scanner
before boot up, USB is hot plugable and should be detected on plugging it in
when it should start up correctly.

NobodyMan has a very good point about using the correct drivers, the Me ones
are not suitable and you must use XP ones.
