a week ago, i diconnected fro the net(dial-up) left computer on and went
outdoors for a half hour, came back in, tried to reconnect, dial tone, very
faint, distorted, operators voice...if you wish to make a call, please hang up
and try again, I tried everything, tech support, isp support, purchased new
modem, New modem sounds distorted when dialing, takes 6 attempts or more to
connect, I DO NOT have sp2, I did not change anything, simply left the puter
on, discon. from the net, now all this problem, could this require a
reinstall of XP os/ and if so ....procedure...please! p.S. I have already
contacted vendor support for the new modem, some tweaks, no help, suggested
taking the modem back...I just can't see two modems having the same problem,
phone cords, phone lines, all OK, no tangled wires, etc.

PP,

Maybe your phone line is the problem. Call your phone company.

Do you have a firewall active? Check your system for viruses and
spyware
