When my machine was new it started up rather quickly. Since I've had a virus
and had to do a major clean up and system restore, it takes several minutes.

Is there anything I can do except reinstall from scratch?

Maybe you didn't catch everything ?

Let's find out...

1) Download the following four items...

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt261.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using the three
utilities; Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

Also, as we use Windows and change/add files/programs, the hard drive places
the files all over the place. You may want to do a Disk Defragmentation so
as to re-position the files in a better order.
NOTE: Backup all important file and be patient. This can take a
couple of hours.

Many thanks.

Done that, and no viruses or other nasties found. (I had previously turned
off restore, and run AVG, Trend Housecall and Adware, and cleaned out lots
of stuff). However Trend had many complaints that it couldn't open files, eg
"C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\ntuser.dat" and
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB824141$\user32.dll"

What should I do next?

Cheers

Tony

Then open a command prompt and execute

CHKDSK /F

When you are prompted "Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) n"

Enter; Y

close the Command Prompt and reboot.

After a complete Check Disk is performed and you are back in the OS, defrag the hard disk.
