View Full Version : Windows Messenger 4.7 voice not working BOTH ways

So I had to "bite the bullet" and reformat my C: drive ...absolutely
everything is now working fine except the voice feature in Messenger 4.7.
Individuals called can hear me.... but for some reason , I can't hear them.
All settings are the same as before. Any solutions ? :(

Greetings pin,
Firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning
Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.
Then, both you and your contact should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall isn't on -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type
of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that
Messenger is set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).
If that's not the case, and if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support),
you may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should
be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button,
click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.
Finally, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try
again.

Thank You Jonathan, but sadly none of those suggestions resolved the
problem. I even upgraded my Linksys firmware hoping that might do it,
but...to no avail. Just can't for the life of me understand how this can
happen. Installed the same operating system (XP Pro) and put everything back
fresh and new....and as I said earlier, absolutely everything is working
fine EXCEPT I know the other party can hear me, but I can't hear them
:( go figure !!!!

Jonathan --
Installed your Intel NIC file fix on both Dell Desktops
with Intel card. Now I (Dell laptop without Intel NIC)
can get near perfect video with each. Thanks! However,
audio only works well when connected to one of the
Desktops. The other hears me a little and I can't hear
them at all. They ran tuning wizard, I checked their
audio settings from control panel - all looks fine. When
they speak, they see green in the volume indicator in the
Messenger Window (as do I), and its not blocked. I have
run out of ideas. It must be something on that one
computer. Their speakers produce sound for other
applications just fine.
Any ideas??? We're both using latest MSN Messenger. By
the way, is there any difference, as far as quality of
video or voice between latest versions of MSN and Windows
Messenger??
Thanks again.l

Hi pin,
Try this -- first create a Restore Point in System Restore (just in case) (click Start, then
Help & Support, then 'Undo changes to my computer using System Restore', click Create a
restore point and follow the wizard). Then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/intelnicfix.reg
Then reboot and see if the problem is resolved.
