View Full Version : MSN Messenger 6 - Sign In doesn't ask for my password!!!
J.R. Allas

When I upgraded from Windows Messenger 5.0 to MSN Messenger 6, I learned
to live with the fact that I now had to Messengers. I had Windows Messenger
5.0
set to ask me for my User ID and Password, which was great. When I installed
MSN Messenger 6, I quickly learned that when I click the SIGN IN button, it
signs
me in without asking for my User ID and Password. I've tolerated it until now.
I just installed MSN Messenger on my new laptop, and found that the opening
MSN Messenger 6 window looks slightly different on my laptop than on my PC. On
my PC, my e-mail address (.net User ID) is above the SIGN IN button, and below
that, it says, "To sign in with a different account, click here." On my
laptop, neither
of these things are present, so when I click on the SIGN IN button, I'm asked
for
my E-mail address and Password. I can force this to happen on my PC by
clicking
the "To sign in with a different account, click here."
Can anyone tell me how I can keep MSN Messenger 6 on my PC from
automatically
signing me in? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I do not
have the "Allow
automatic sign-in", or the "Automatically run Messenger when Windows starts"
options
turned on.
Why is it different on both these PC's? The only major difference I know
of is that
the PC is running Windows XP PRO and the laptop is running Windows XP Home.
Thanks in advance for any help...

Greetings,
To stop Messenger from automatically logging you in, click the Start Button, then click the
Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select your account name, and
then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network
Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click
'Remove'.

That worked perfectly... Thank you very much for the help. Given plenty
of
time, give or take a couple years, I might have stumbled onto that solution.

The only problem now is that the MSN Messenger icon in the system
tray pesters me to activate my .net passport for Win XP. I think that's what
happened to me last time... I'll just close that bubble when pops up from
now on. Thanks again!

Hi,
The balloon should actually disappear after 6-7 times of running MSN Messenger 6. If it
still hasn't, close down MSN Messenger 6 (right-click its icon in the notification
area/system tray and click Exit), then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/disablepassportballoon_msn.reg
After this the balloon will no longer be shown (in MSN Messenger)
