View Full Version : Kazaa and SP2
Andy Bonanno
November 28th 04, 04:57 AM
I've been able to load and use Kazaa for a while now. But now that I've
loaded SP2, Kazaa shuts down as fast as it starts. I can open task manager
and see the programs start when I click its icon. But they disappear
immediately afterward.
Before I get the lectures about spyware and copyrights, let me say that if
you aren't going to offer any useful help, don't waste our time. I know all
about Kazaa and I've been able to run it spyware free using Kazaa Lite.
Yes, I know how to check for spyware. Also, I've disabled the SP2 firewall
in lieu of the firewall I've been using. I haven't changed any settings.
I've looked in my restricted sites zone and there aren't any sites listed
there.
SP2 is unloading the software and I'd like to know how to stop it. Any
help?

please stop using kazaa or kazaa lite, use something more stable and less
problems with downloads and spyware and viruses.
ever heard of emule.com very good peer2peer software.

People are quick to blame the OS and SP2. I have Kazaa Lite installed with
XP SP2 and it runs fine. You'll have to look elsewhere for the source of
your problem.

After your brow beating, here's your answer. Control Panel > Windows

future are a little more repectful of the help you will undoubtedly receive

Get rid of kazaa for best results and computer health.

Drew, you misunderstood my intent. I gave nobody a brow beating. I have
searched high and low for a solution to this problem. In every instance,
the three most common posts were lectures about using Kazaa, ways to stop
using Kazaa by switching to another P2P service, and uninstalling Kazaa
completely. I tried with limited success to save time by asking that those
answers not be posted. I got six responses to my post. The first was from
some guy who seems to think that lectures are why newsgroups were created,
three posts were from people who wanted me to quit using Kazaa anyway, and
one post was from a supposed MS MVP who thinks that even though the problem
originated by installing SP2, it can't be SP2 that is to blame. Your
response was the only one of six that even offered any suggestion at all
with the intent of helping me. While your suggestion was unsuccessful (I'll
get to that shortly), I thank you for trying. However, you say that I
should be a little more respectful of the help I will receive. I am always
respectful of people offering genuine help. If you read any of my other
posts, you will see that.
Now, I've read about making changes in port settings and exceptions even if
I have the windows firewall turned off. I use McAfee Guardian and have not
had any problems using Kazaa. It is with this SP2 that I started having a
problem. Obviously I don't want to uninstall Kazaa because I've been able
to use it successfully. You suggested I click the exception box for Kazaa.
Kazaa was not listed among the exceptions so I added all the programs
associated with KLite and selected them. Even though I still have the
firewall off, this got the Khancer function running but the main program
still shuts down. Would you have any other tips or tweaks that I might try?

Harry, I didn't have the problem until I installed SP2. Also, my FaxTalk
Messenger will no longer send faxes now either. It has the exact same
symptoms as the Kazaa. Program loads, does nothing, then unloads.
MS has always had a way of saying it can't be the OS. Then all the other
manufacturers have to rework their programs to fit the new OS. It's never
MS's fault. Are you familiar with all of the security updates in SP2? Do
you know of a way to let blocked programs run?

Im having this EXACT same problem... and to those who have said its NOT
SP2... it HAS to be. Kazaa has ALWAYS worked perfectly for me using XP, i
installed every online update for the original XP too, and it all worked
fine. I EVEN installed SP2 the other month and still kazaa worked perfectly
for me... its only now, ive formatted my main drive (its a long story) and
reinstalled everything... but kazaa WILL NOT connect. It loads up, its
allowed through my firewall, but still no connection. Im thinking of
uninstalling SP2, then installing K-lite, and then installing SP2 after to
see what happens! You never know... wish me luck.
In the mean time, if anyone has figured out how to allow Kazaa to work
without me doing this i would love to know!!

Look at it this way, IF Kazaa is NOT compatible with Windows XP SP2 then
it's NOT compatible! Windows is NOT designed around software
applications but the other way around.

Amen.
For the OP. Does Kazaa not have tech support you could ask? If it really
is an issue with SP2, they should have a workaround/fix.

Limewire is a lot better, IMO. My teens use it and I have cleaned Kazaa
