I've recently ordered the CD from the MS website but reading through some of
the postings, people seem to have a lot of problems after installation. Can
anyone advise if this update is worth installing.

Would you stop going to the hospital since everyone there seems to be ill?
The same applies to this newsgroup - people come here when they have
problems. Update your system with Windows Update, update your AV software
and definitions and read a bit more to see some of the good things to do
prior to updating. SP2 is both good and safe for you if you prepare
yourself prior to the install.

Thanks everyone. I've not got much experience with XP and I'm hoping to
install this on my dads home PC.

I also have installed SP2 on over 150 computers so far with no ill
effects. However, you *must* prepare your Dad's machine properly. If he
is a typical home user, then his machine probably has spyware at the
very least. The machine *must* be 100% virus and spyware-free *before*
you install SP2. If the machine is an OEM (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.) you
*must* first go to the OEM's website and see if there are any patches
that need to be installed *prior* to installing SP2.

Provided you make sure that there is *not* any infection with adware etc
(see http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm for advice) and that AV has
been run with right up to date definitions, there should not be trouble.
Boot with AV etc off, and the Internet disconnected, and run the program
on the CD. Should take about half an hour or so

Ok, well here's another experience....
Have done the due diligences for driver updates, spyware and virus =
checks,
and defragmenting, and still cannot achieve a successful install of SP2.
The system goes into a continuous reboot mode when the Windows Desktop is
almost up. Fortunately there's been a Ghost image backup ready to
recover.
Mine is a custom-built system (Gigabyte motherboard w/RAID, firewire and
SCSI devices) and I suspect that is my albatross. Yes, it has the latest
BIOS update and all up-to-date drivers. The best that I've been able to =
do
is install SP2 from a fresh install of XP. In this case, all seemed well
except a Philips CDRW drive (IDE) which is no longer available. I've not
found an update driver for that device but it worked fine before the SP2
update.
By the way, I have updated two other PCs in our household, one a notebook
PC to SP2.
=46rom my perspective Microsoft has done a very poor job. I would =
expect an
OS update to make the system more robust, not less so.=20
YMMV
