Hasn't anyone solved this problem?
I don't have (and to my knowledge have never had) and ComputerAssoc
anti-virus on my machine. I have run PC-cillin and uninstalled it (not just
turned it off). I still get the same "Control ID not found" error. I don't
see anything running in my Processes list that looks like an AV process.
Someone out there must know the answer. Bill Gates, can you help me?

What problem? You need to quote some references to the original problem
in your subsequent posts. My news server doesn't have your first post
so I have no idea what your problem is. Bill Gates does not read this
newsgroup, but thousands of volunteers (like me) do, who want to help
you.
Try doing a clean boot per this Knowledge Base article:

Sorry. I thought all the posts were there for everyone to see--I had just
read them all on my browser.
Installing SP2 => error message "Control ID not found.' Windows KB article
878472 claims this is a problem due to interference by eTrust. Several
people, including me, have had this problem when there is no eTrust on their
computer. (I even did a HDD search for 'eTrust' which came up with nothing.)
I have used PC-cillin and uninstalled it. Others have had the problem as
clients of Symantec. Clearly it's not something that just has to do with
eTrust and Computer Associates.
I will try your "clean boot" suggestion and share the results.

I echo the frustration posted to this thread. I continue to receive the
"Control ID Not found" error when trying to install SP2 after having tried
EVERYTHING noted in this thread. By way of background only NAV was installed
on this machine (no other AntiVirus). Surely I don't have to reinstall
Windows XP????
Thanks in advance

The "clean boot" did not help. I got the same install-abort and error message
("Control ID not found") after the "basic" clean start. When I went further
and disabled Load System Services, XP would not let me manually start Windows
Installer as the KB article suggested (said Plug And Play or something was
missing) and, in any case IE would not work so I could not access Windows
Update (I kept getting a Javascript error message and had to use Task Manager
to kill IE).
Thanks, Bill. I could have totally reinstalled XP and all my other programs
by now.

What is Windows Installer looking for when it can't find the "Control ID"?
That is, what is control ID? What is it for? Where would it be generated?
etc. If we knew these things, we might have a better shot at understanding
the problem.
(Apologies if this posts twice. My sense is that the first one was lost in
cyber-space, since I got a IP address was not available my my message just
disappeared.)

Are you getting the hint that either they have no idea why we are getting
this message or they simply don't care? Come on now Bill's team - surely
Windowed and I can't be the only 2 folks on the planet unable to load SP2
without getting the control ID not found warning.
MS guys - Please don't even bother to respond with advice if you are not
going to read the entire thread first. We have both tried everything
suggested to date with no luck.

UPDATE: I contacted the free SP2 support at M$ (Rock's URL did not work for
me.) THey had me re-download the package and install it from my drive rather
than through WIndows Update. This install succeeded (total for download and
install, about 4 hrs.). Unfortunately , after the install so many things (OS
type things) did not work that I decided I had better go with a clean
install. I ended up doing it (and much of my backuprecovery) several times
because the computer would get infected the instant I tried logging on to M$
to register and get the critical upgrades necessary to protect the computer
(IE holes). As my daughter said, "Without those upgrades, Windows is just an
open window to my computer." I finally downloaded the 8 upgrades to a
different machine and installed them before connecting to the internet. I
also decided not to do SP2, tho the tech rep from M$ suggested three files
from the SP2 package that I should install in any case. I will probably do
those when I get caught up on my other work again.
