View Full Version : webcam conversation problem with messenger 6.0

We're having a problem getting a webcam conversation to work. Here's the
scenario:
Both participants are running XP pro with MSN messenger 6.0. Both have a
Logitech Quickcam pro 4000 web cam. One is on broadband cable the other is
on a T1 via WiFi . Video works fine but we can't get the audio to work.
Sometimes when the "cable "guy" intitates the conversation, it's terminated
as soon as it's accepted by the "WiFi guy". We've used the wizard to set the
mikes and cameras. We've tried it with and without the Qos packet scheduler
checked. Neither of us are behind a firewall. What else can we try ?
Thanks

Hi Pat
You could try installing the UPNP protocol this sometimes works for some set
ups.
Have either of you tried your set ups with another user?

Hi Paul;
No we haven't tried with another user yet. We don't know anyone else who's
interested in trying. What is the UPNP protocol ?
Thanks;
Pat

Greetings Pat,
Installing the "UPnP Protocol" will do nothing -- the actual NATs (that is, internet sharing)
has to support UPnP, and even then, the UPnP software in Windows is *not* required for
Messenger to work.
However, is this T1/WiFi connection behind some type of router/internet sharing/NAT? If so,
then without UPnP support (in the NAT as I said above, not the software), audio conversation
will not work. MSN Messenger 6's "Webcam" feature can utilize a "relay server", to get
around most connectivity problems, but audio conversations require a direct connection, hence
why this isn't working.

>UPnP = Universal Plug and Play. A networking protocol
that provides access to external devices without
configuring specifically for them.

Thanks Jonathan;
From a brief conversation with my wifi isp, it appears that there might
indeed be an NAT issue involved. The ISP is a local service that broadcasts
wifi to the neighborhood. He said there might also be an issue with
non-static IP addresses. As this is all black magic to me, what questions
should I ask the ISP and what might some possible solutions be ? They're
very cooperative and may be able to make some changes to allow audio
transmission.
Thanks;

>I'm having hte exact same issue. Logitech says they
don't require any ports to be opened, but the audio
stopped working after I installed a linksys.
Can we limit the ports to exacts?
