I am attached to a LAN and have always been able to use
messenger v 3.0.
Recently we have updated machines and went with XP. The
version of messenger was 4.7.0041 and it worked fine. I
downloaded 4.7.2009 on the update site after adding in all
security updates. I could not get access to messenger
error message said either passport was wrong or site was
unaccessible. I have also tried v5 and v6 to the same
effect.
Now when I kick up messenger it says unless I download
4.7.2009 i cant get access.
Any suggestions greatly apreciated

Greetings Grg,
Here are some suggestions you might want to check/try:
1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
3. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
4. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
If none of these work, are you able to access sites with SSL (ex. https://www.passport.net,
click Sign In at the top)? The newer versions of Messenger (starting with 4.7.2005) use SSL
to connect (port 443), so if you're not able to access this port for your LAN, this is why
you're not able to login.
