Hey Jonathon ive put a post on here before about msn
messenger 6 freezing and i noticed another person with
the same video card had the same problem (Ati Rage Lt 3D
Pro) have u got any ideas what can be done about this i
would like to upgrade from msn messenger 5 and be able to
see emoticons etc. which i can not see with msn messenger
5 and windows messenger 5, also another query is msn
messenger 5 and windows messenger 5 sign me out
automatically when left idol for a while, i have cable
internet and i have had no internet problems at all, any
ideas what could be causing msn messenger 5 and windows
messenger 5 to sign me out and what i could try to fix it.
thanks jonathon

Greetings Marcus,
No word yet on the ATI Rage bug, but yes, someone else has had the same issue.
As for random logging out, are you using ZoneAlarm? If so, try putting it into the "Medium"
setting and then see if the problem disappears. Other third-party firewall applications
(like Norton Internet Security, Sygate, etc.) should have Messenger set to 'Permit All' or
'Allow All'.
If you're using a router, make sure you have the latest firmware from your router
manufacturer. As well, you might try setting your computers local IP into the routers DMZ
setting (see documentation on how to do this).
This can also happen due to a lack of bandwidth. If you have Kazaa, WinMX, GNUtella or some
other file sharing-type application or something else that takes considerable amounts of
bandwidth, you may want to shut it down and see if that helps the situation (even if you're
using a high speed connection, these applications can use most of the resources of your
connection).

Greetings (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional [MVP]
Jonathon) "I think i got your title right"
I managed to fix the problem with random signing out by
changing my lan settings under internet explorer, msn
messenger 6 is still an ongoing troublesome issue, I
still cant be sure its an ATI issue thats causing the
freeze although it seems likely, with some research and
trying a few things, by disabling my video card under
device manager and using windows xp default driver the
problem didnt go away, however when i uninstalled windows
service pack 1 the problem was not as bad, i would be
able to use msn messenger 6 for about half an hour,
instead of it freezing after i open a conversation
window, very stange behaviour indeed. Yet msn messenger 5
runs perfectly fine without any problems or errors at
all. Any further ideas about what is behind this mystery.
Thanks heaps for ur ongoing help and assistance.

Hi Marcus,
Yes, that's exactly right =).
Some interesting results -- what I'd be interested in knowing is if you could reproduce the
"freeze" under Safe Mode (with Networking).

Hello Jonathon
My computer has trouble starting up with safe mode with
networking it has a similar freeze to msn messenger 6,
very strange, also when I untick animate windows when
maximising and minimising under performance msn messenger
6 no longer freezes when i maximise and minimise instead
it freezes a couple of minutes into the conversation.
Sounds to me like a very dodgy video driver. and
unfortunately the only one available is the one on the
windows xp pro cd. any further ideas
thanks jonathon

Hello Jonathon
My computer has trouble starting up with safe mode with
networking it has a similar freeze to msn messenger 6,
very strange, also when I untick animate windows when
maximising and minimising under performance msn messenger
6 no longer freezes when i maximise and minimise instead
it freezes a couple of minutes into the conversation.
Sounds to me like a very dodgy video driver. and
unfortunately the only one available is the one on the
windows xp pro cd. any further ideas?
thanks jonathon
