View Full Version : SP2 64 bit version?

Does ANYONE have any info or links for SP2 for Win XP made specifically for
AMD 64 CPUs?

Not a 64bit version!! but rather SP2 made for AMD 64's running on a 32bit
version of XP.

There is a major problem with AMD64's and the DEP feature in SP2 , and it
was said somewhere (I can't remember where)that MS was/would be working on a
special verson of SP2.

I have serched the MS site myself and come up empty , MS FAQ's/Help and
Support pointed me here.

Thanks

twice before BUT I never added the C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries!!

I'll Give this a try!

Thank you again , and I've used the SP2 Help chat before , its a great option.

Hi, "There is a major problem with AMD64's", news to me, where did you get
that information from. I trawl around many AMD64 forums and haven't seen any
evidence that SP2 has problems with AMD64 processors. Are you maybe getting
confused with SP2 having problems with motherboard bios's?

For the benefit of those reading this thread...

There is no issue with SP2 and AMD64 processors.

I'll say that again to be sure everyone understands it..

There is no issue with sp2 and AMD64 processors.

I have it running here just fine on all my AMD64 and DEP runs perfectly.

The issue is with certain drivers that require mpegport.sys. It is related
to a completely different issue that AMD64 chips.

Somehow, this myth keeps getting resurrected, mostly by those who have no
clue what they are talking about.

Those of you reading this thread who own AMD64 procs should not hesitate
putting SP2 on your machine. There is no problem with SP2 and AMD64. None
at all.

These are the offical AMD Prosesser Forums , in here under any heading with
the words AMD 64's and XP SP2 in the title you will find the info I'm talking
about including a response from AMD Tech Support admitting the problem with
the suggestion NOT to install SP2 untill MS fixes it.

The letter from AMD support as found on their Forums is as follows:

Thank you for contacting AMD's Technical Service Center.

As I stated, there is no difficulties from a hardware perspective. All
of the conflicts arising are driver related (Mpegport.sys, etc). These
drivers were written in such a way that they conflict with Microsoft's
implementation of DEP. We also tested SP2 with our processors prior to
its release and found no conflicts. Somewhere between the beta build
we have of SP2 and final release, new issues have risen.

These problems are associated with AMD because we are the only ones at
the moment that have Enhanced Virus Protection. When Intel comes out
with their next round, they will also have something like EVP
(actually, exactly the same thing just with a different name). Windows
XP SP2 will have the same problems with those processors as well.

Unfortunately, we are paying the price for being an industry leader in
this area. SP2 has more problems than just the DEP, yet this is what
people are focusing on.

As for your resolution, unfortunately, it will probably be best to hold
off on SP2 until Microsoft resolves these issues.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to
contact me.

Jim

I also saw that you posted in these forums allready so you probably
allready saw this and just choose not to believe it.
But trust me , if you have/ever get this problem your gonna know it!!

Thanks for that post BadDog , I am having this problem that may have to do
with this mpegport.sys , can you Please WITHOUT insulting me help me work
around this?
if you have any links or help topics handy please post.

PS: I tried the "Turn off DEP for all programs and services except those I
select" option (as suggested by Carey) but after a few reboots Explorer has
to be added then Outlook express then Steam then HL Launcher and on and on it
goes.

I have tried:
Reinstall of XP Pro with SP2 (on disk) installed right after all the newest
drivers in the order recomended by MS and ASUS , installing 1 program at a
time to find the problem....I've done this 3 times.

Also I have tried , installing XP Pro SP1 , getting it all up and running
(Which I mght add has NO PROBLEMS) and then updating to SP2 from win
update......still a no go.

PLEASE if you have any HELPFULL comments please advise.

Thank you ,

Rob

Sheesh!! I have never seen a more bitter angry insulting bunch of people in

Rob;

Wasn't meant to be insulting. Sorry if it seemed that way to you. The
point I was trying to make is that the issues you are having have absolutely
nothing to do with your AMD64 processor. It has to do with your video card
or other driver that requires mpegport.sys. There is no known workaround
that I am aware of, although I am sure that others will post if one exists.
I wanted to make sure that other people reading this thread did not begin to
think that there is a conflict with SP2 and AMD64 processors. It's a nasty
little rumor that just seems as if it refuses to die. I wanted it clearly
understood that the "Major problem) did not exist.

Here is the best information at hand to deal with this issue:

Microsoft has released a knowledge based article that covers an issue with
SP2 and the Athlon 64. Some users are complaining of constant reboots after
they have installed SP2. The cause of this issue is the mpegport.sys file
which tries to write to the memory protected by the NX bit.

This issue occurs if all the following conditions are true:

* You install the 32-bit version of Windows XP SP2 on a computer that
has an AMD 64-bit processor.
* You configure your computer to enforce data execution prevention
(DEP). DEP is also known as no-execute protection.
* You installed hardware that requires the Mpegport.sys driver.

When you restart your computer after you install Windows XP SP2, the
Mpegport.sys driver tries to write data to a memory location that is
monitored by DEP. This behavior causes the computer to restart.
RESOLUTION
You may be able to resolve this issue if you configure a DEP exception. To
do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab under Performance, click Settings.
3. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, click Hardware and software DEP
enabled for all programs except.
4. Click Add, type the path of the Mpegport.sys file on your hard disk,
and then click OK two times.

The other solution is to remove SP2 entirely.

As you can see, Microsoft is aware of the issue, and it is related to other
hardware and not to the AMD64 processor.

Thank you BadDog , sorry I was so upset. I had posted in another topic to a
guy that wanted to know about a good RegCleaner and took some crap just for
trying to help the guy. I usually just look through here for help/tips (I
like several good forums for most info) but today I decided to post
and....LOL I felt like I was a stupid ass and I have a fairly good knowledge
of PC's , I build all my own and I rarly have any problems.

But I have been going round and round with this issue since SP2 was
released , I even spent 3 hours 1 day with the SP2 chat support and the end
result was to uninstall SP2.

I have an AMD 2800 Barton on a A7N8X Dlx with the same video driver and
card installed (it has onboard sound though) that has SP2 Installed and it
Runs great. I guess the reason I was still on the "old News" bandwagon of the
conflict was because of the letter from AMD Tech support.

It seems that I am just going to have to wait for MS to fix the issue (if
at all) or wait for the next OS.

With SP2 installed I don't get the reboot because I have my OS to NOT
reboot on error but I have problems with IE6 , OE , and Windows Explorer when
looking at any LARGE photo file (I make Picture CD's) if you can believe it <
like I said I've tried to set DEP to not monitor these programs but the list
just grows and a few of my favorite programs I use do not work under SP2 at
all.

I am however going to give it one more try with your advice about the
Mpegport.sys and if it fails to satisfy then I'm sticking to SP1 and a Good
Firewall and Virus protection , I use the new Zone Alarm Security Suite now
and it seems ok.

Thanks for the time and info ,

Rob

Hi, maybe AMD are aware of something I'm not but my system is working
flawlessly, Asus A8V AMD64 3500 Winchester, SP2, dep turned on for all
programs and services. If there was a 'major' issue then all of the
newsgroups, forms and press would be full of it, which they aren't. Stating
that it's a 'major', issue is, in my opinion overstating the case. I'm not
in anyway indenting to insult or flame you but we should steer clear of
using such emotive words....

Hello again Chris ,

Yes maybe you and BadDg are right , "Major issue" is probably overstating
it a bit I guess when I saw all the folks at the AMD 64 support forums having
the same issues I just assumed it to be that bad , I think I'm just gonna
have to deal with not using SP2 on my 64 system.

My 2800XP works fine though , NOT 1 probelm as a matter fact its more
stable , with nearly all the same hardware (drivers and soforth) except for
the onboard sound.

But I can't even run SP2 on my 64 for a week without IE6 and OE giveing me
errors and having to have DEP ignore them then alot of other programs follow
, my guide plus+ (not a nessessary program I know , but I like it =) ) will
not even start , and forget Norton IS and Zone Alarm.

I'm going to give it 1 more try and this time I'm going to test it with
every driver install untill I find the problem...and then i give up.

PS: I have a K8V SE Dlx with a AMD63 3200 (1mb L2) and I love it!! I love
ASUS boards =)

Thanks Chris

Hi Rob, this might be a long shot but have you by any chance used ver 4.53
of the Via 4 in 1's and installed via's own cpu to agp driver. It is
recommended to use the MS one that comes with SP1, even via have recognised
the problem and the latest 4 in 1's do not install the via driver. It was
just what BadDg said about it linked to the video card that made me think
it might be this....

Actually your right I have used the 4.53 every time , I just d/l the 4.55
the other day which is supposed to NOT install the AGP driver if you have SP2
installed.....that Just may be the problem!!!

I allways install my System like this:

XP Pro/SP1

SP2 (on disk)

DX9C (installed with SP2)

VIA 4 in 1's (4.53)

other mobo Drivers , NIC , SATA.....

Video

Sound

I get all updates

EVERYTIHNG ELSE.

I think I will try it without the VIA AGP driver this time and see what
shakes!!!

HEY!! I wonder if I can roll back my AGP driver to the SP1 and just upgrade
to SP2 without doing a whole reformat??? I may try that first , if you don't
here from me it didn't work and I can't reinstall XP till after Christmas
(will be working this weekend Till!!) or I guess I could use my wifes
PC......if she'll let me , hers works flawlessly with SP2 =(

GREAT INFO!! man I hope this works.....allthough I really don't know why
I'm trying to install SP 2 so badly.....its a sickness I think.

Have a Fantastc Holliday!!! =)

Hi, I think the way to do it is to d/load the 4.53's, start the setup and
click on uninstall, that should remove the hyperions, make sure you backup
your system first. Now re-install the 4.53 but use normal install and
uncheck the cpu to agp, let the install take place then reboot and install
the 4.55's. Hopefully this will keep SP2's MS driver....
