View Full Version : SP2 - Activate Windows after installation of SP2

My mother recently allowed automatic updates to try and install SP2 forWinXP
prof via dial up (without consulting me first)... Now when the pc is booted,
at the log on screen, it keeps prompting to Activate Windows, there is no way
to access Windows, it just keeps returning the log on screen with the same
prompt. I have logged into safe mode and uninstalled SP2, but this has not
helped. What can I do to get round this Activation prompt?

Hi, Frances.
The obvious question: Has she activated WinXP? If not, why not? If she
tried, HOW did she try? What happened?

Well Windows was working before SP2 installation, so why should it require to
be activated after installation? We tried to activate using the autmatic
dial up, but it would not recognise the modem. Don't have XP cd as it was
purchased with XP preinstalled.
Am now thinking I will have to buy another copy of XP in order to activate it?

NO! There should be a method of using the teelephone to call up Microsoft
Activiations. It is mostly automated but you may have to speak to a rep.

There are two options for activation, one is to activate over the Internet
and the other is to activate by phone. You will need to boot to Safe Mode,
boot the system, start tapping F8, when the menu appears, select Safe Mode
and press enter. At Safe Mode, there should be an option to log on as
administrator using that as the ID. Use that ID, leave the password blank
and press enter, this should get you into Safe Mode. Then run activation
and use the activate by phone option when it is presented.

You might want to check the support site of whomever made the PC (e.g.,
Dell, Gateway, Compaq). Not all PCs can handle SP-2, unless something else
is also done first. And, given where you are, they might be able to help,
since if it is a specific PC-model/SP2 problem, they may have heard of it
already.
