i recently installed MSN Messenger 6.0 (last version was
4.7 w/o any add-in upgrades)... now my windows xp welcome
screen reports that i have 8 unread messages (attributed
to my hotmail account which i had recently emptied i.e. 0
messages)

any new unread messages are added to this value (i.e. if
i have 2 unread messages in my inbox, the welcome screen
will report 10)

i tried clearing caches/cookies etc., also tried updating
and removing my old msn... i use my outlook express for a
different address which is working fine...

anyone know how to correct this?

Greetings Bruce,

To correct this, just edit the number in the registry. To do so, click Start, then click Run
and enter "regedit.exe" and click OK. Then navigate (it's like Windows Explorer) to My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wind ows\CurrentVersion\UnreadM

Where is the passport. Double-click the MessageCount and enter 0 as
the value (this will set back to none). Then click OK, close the registry editor, and log
out.

If you want to disable this feature all together (no registry changes required), download the
TweakUI powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).

After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.
