xp sp2 freezing

I have XP Pro SP2 installed. Everything seems to work work except when I open
my Broadband connection, when connected the pc freezes for about 2 minutes
then kicks into life. No other problems when system is up and running. I have
an Alcatel Speed Touch USM modem with the latest available drivers fitted.

Mine does the same thing, except for I'm using a dialup connection.
