After I ran gpedit and supposedly disabled Messenger, Outlook Express
started to load VERY slowly. I recall that there is a fix for this but
I haven't been able to locate the instructions for how to fix it. Can
someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Greetings Bill,
Just close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
Outlook Express will now start at full speed.

Thanks much for you solution, which I think worked. I also received
another response that I applied as well because I recall that it
worked when I "solved" this problem several months ago. Here is the
other approach:
"If you disable Messenger, OE takes forever to load if you have the
Contacts pane enabled. Go to: Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this
key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express Add a New,
DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2."
It came from "woody" on the annoyances.org site.

Hi Bill,
It's the same thing, that's all the .reg file does.

It must do it a different way. I ran your .reg process before I saw
Woody's message. Then after I saw his message, I ran regedit and
looked at the keys. I found DWords for "Disable Hotmail" and "HTTP
Mail Enabled" but none for "Hide Messenger". Following Woody's
instructions, I added a DWord for "Hide Messenger".

Hi Bill,
Open up the .reg file in Notepad if you don't believe me =).

So now I have a real mystery: Why didn't I see that entry when I ran
regedit?

Hi Bill,
I think I know -- the stopmessenger_oe.reg is set for a per user setting (HKEY_CURRENT_USER),
whereas you were looking in the global ones (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) -- both work of course.
