To all,

After zero filling HDD of SP2, and reinstalling SP1, a problem still
occurred with Drive Image 7 in that starting the service would cause the PC
to freeze. This also occurred with Roxio EZCD 6.
I found the cooling fan on the 4600 AGP card had seized, and replaced the
card with an old S3 Trio. Still problem remained. Removed all other PCI
cards, and reinserted one at a time to see which one was causing problems.
Found Promise Ultra card faulty, which controls DVD drive.
The lock ups stopped. I again zero filled the drive, to install slipped SP2
and despite only having 800 x 600 for the install, all programs, apart from
Drive image 7, worked fine.
For Drive Image, I restored a previous working copy using its own backup
sequence, and the application is fine and working, I am taking this issue up
with Symantec and currently discussing resolutions.

So why the trouble when installing SP2 when the existing SP1 was fine? Can
only put this down to coincidence. The Ultra card was detected OK by SP2
when reinstalling, and there were no other hardware conflicts, and all
drivers were installed correctly according to Device Manager.

This PC is working fine now, and yes running well with "old" software.

Here is a list (a long list) of the problems fixed in SP2,
you can decide if the fixes are worthwhile.

Windows configuration changed.
Symtoms that only look like x is the problem, but it was the interaction of
