Question About The Future of Windows Messenger

Hi!

I've been monitoring this NG for a while now but still can't find an answer.
Will there be a Windows Messenger on par (cuteness, mainly) of MSN Messenger
6?

Will the next version of Windows Messenger be a clone of MSN Messenger 6? No, they're
separate products with different features and different objectives -- that's about all that I
know and can tell you at this point.

Thanks...as long as I can Webcam chat between WM and MSN Messenger, I will
be OK with that..I don't really need the additional emoticons.

Hi Brian,

You can now, as long as both sides are using Windows XP and the MSN Messenger user initiates
the video conversation using the Actions menu, 'Start Video Conference' (or the Windows
Messenger user uses the 'Start Camera' option).

Otherwise the actual 'Start Webcam' option in MSN Messenger 6 is not compatible with Windows
Messenger (and I don't think it will be any time soon).

I have a private bet with myself (can't lose this one!) that MS is going
to be forced into a level playing field (anti-trust issue) with Yahoo,
AOL, etc., wherein it will be legal to have a MSN messenger that
theoretically competes head to head with other ISP messengers, but not a
messenger supplied as a part of the operating system. WM will
disappear so as not to be perceived as unfairly driving out ISP
competition with an OS product.

Windows Messenger will not disappear so long as it has
functionality not included in MSN Messenger. There has been
no information released to this date suggesting that MSN
Messenger will ever offer support for the SIP protocol which is
used to communicate with the Live Communications Server (LCS).

MSN Messenger => Consumer market
Windows Messenger => Commercial, Enterprise market

"Cuteness" is not often mentioned by IT professionals as a
requirement for a commercial product.

Microsoft has also expended considerable effort toward
compatibility of the two products so you can run them
simultaneously, so long as they are not both connected to
MSN .NET Messenger Service. For example, I run both
with MSN Messenger connected to .NET Service, and
Windows Messenger 5 connected to a local LCS Server.
