View Full Version : Where do I find the correct version of SP2 for my XP Home edition

This is fairly basic enough.

I have just bought a new computer with XP Home edition version 2002
installed which, I understand, includes SP1. I don't actually know as there
is a hardware issue and I haven't managed to get it started yet. Meanwhile,
I thought I would download SP2 to my old machine, Win2k, in anticipation so
that I could install it prior to exposing my new, unprotected, PC to the
Internet.

I have looked at the download area of M$'s site and, sure enough, there is a
plethora of downloads of various flavours of SP2 but, sadly, not one clearly
entitled "SP2 - XP Home edition for dummies"

I realise that I am somewhat lacking in the Geek Speak area so I would be
most grateful if one of you out there who has been down this road could
spell it out for me in a fairly unambiguous way.

Many thanks

The IT release of SP2 is 266 MB and covers all versions of
Windows XP. If you check to make sure the SP1 version has
the firewall turned ON , it is safe to connect and download
just the required update for the particular computer from
Windows Update.
You can also order a SP2 CD (free, including free shipping)
from MS
at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

The 266 MB download can be burned to a CD, perhaps a friend
has already done this. The "big" file or the CDs will
update any version of XP to SP2.

Are you sure you don't have SP2? It's been out long enough that unless you
bought an old model, your computer will probably already have it installed.

What hardware issue do you have that stops the new computer from working?..
