popups

how can i get rid of these popups that i get on my desk
top. they popup when trying to play games. please
help.

First thing you'll want to do is to install or enable a firewall:

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Gary, I get the pop-up frequently and I currently have McAfee Firewall.
Obviously, I don't fully understand or know how to set this up to block
these pop-ups or I would have done so a long time ago. So that leads me to
2 questions...

1. Can the built-in firewall in XP Home and McAfee both be run at the same
time? If yes, what if any disadvantages/problems are there in doing that?
2. What exactly does the XP Firewall block (incoming/outgoing traffic, ports
or rules, etc., etc)?

If I know what the XP Firewall is blocking that prevents the pop-ups, I
should be able to set McAfee Firewall to do the same thing. Seems to me
that running 2 firewalls is opening the door for possible conflicts. Thanks
for any forthcoming thoughts/help.
