I bought a new laptop (Toshiba Satellite) and after
hooking it up to the internet, everything worked fine
except Windows Messenger. It just would not startup.
Thinking that it might be an older version, I upgraded it
ot Windows Messenger 5.0. After upgrading, the first time
I started it up it gave a couple of popup error message:

Application popup: msmsgs.exe - Application Error : The
instruction at "0x77f58e20" referenced memory
at "0x1d840ff6". The memory could not be "written".

Application popup: msmsgs.exe - Application Error : The
instruction at "0x77f58dc5" referenced memory
at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".

All subsequent attempts to run Windows messenger again
did not produce any popup errors but the application did
not start either.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on? I also
tried installing MSN 6.0 and that would allow me to sign
in, but just as soon as the sign in completed, it would
die. Help!!!

Greetings Vishal,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed also? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause some
of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon
in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
