View Full Version : Multiple problems after SP2 update, worms too...

Yesterday I accepted the SP2 auto update on our home computer(XPHome w/SP1).
Download of upgrade went ok, quick(cable).
After rebooting:
1) I couldn't move the icons on the desktop (I can sort them by any name, size,
date, etc, just cant move them).
2) File Seach(on Start menu) wont run to search for worm files.
3) The programs quick launch bar disappeared, as did the task bar speaker and
network icons.
4) There are now several icons on the Desktop that cant be deleted, one of them
is a webpage(.htm).
5) Internet Explorer wont run several web site online scanner scripts even with
default security settings enabled. I finally was able to download a MS scanner
program which said the computer is clean. Stinger scanner took over 2 hrs to
run.
6) The BIGGEST problem is System Restore will not run at all. I tells me that
my computer cant be protected and I need to restart and run it again. I get
that msg every time I restart and run System Restore. It just does not work. I
cant get to Administrator signin at all. Users icon in Control Panel is empty,
I cant add anyone. I cant even uninstall SP2. My only backup file avail able
is a data backup from the 7th. Doesnt matter because Backup wont work either.
Things are the same in Safe Mode.
I have Dr Solomons AV installed and updated daily, The computer is behind a
router and ZoneAlarm is always on. I had been running SpyBot and AdAware every
week but my kids were on the computer before I ran the SP2 update. Running
SpyBot and AdAware afterwards I found 198 instances of trackers, loggers and
worms, DOH! They're gone now, but the problems remain.
Ok, now where do I start?
Thanks,
TJ

I would suggest uninstalling SP2 then cleaning the system thoroughly and
then trying sp2 again.

If you right click on My Computer, Properties. On the general tab does
it show SP2 installed?
I don't know what else to suggest other than a repair installation. You
could try creating a slipstreamed CD with SP2 and try a repair install
with that.
Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2

Repair Install

Last resort is to reinstall windows fresh.

Slave the drive in another XP or win2k computer and copy the data files
off that way.
