View Full Version : 2 Windows Messenger Problems
Earle

I'm having 2 problems, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
First of all, I can't stop Windows Messenger from automatically signing in.
I've unchecked the check box in preferences, but it doesn't work. I'm using
version 4.7. It was working fine before I installed Msn 5. After
un-installing Msn 5, I can't get it to stop automatically signing me in. Is
there any way to fix this behaviour?
I'm also having a problem exiting messenger. When I right click on it in
the systray, and go to exit, I always get an error message saying, I can't
close messenger, because a program is currently using it. I make sure that
Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express, and any other program I can think of
that may use messenger are closed, but I still get the message.
Thanks for any help, that anyone can provide.

Greetings Earle,
Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed also? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause both
of these problems. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thanks Jonathan.
That worked perfectly. I have Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro, and that was the
problem.
