View Full Version : DMA question

My BIOS says it's configured for PNP OS. I'm running XP/SP1.

When I boot, the BIOS shows my two hard drives as DMA5/PIO4 on pri and sec
IDE controllers.

When XP boots up, I go to Device Manager and look at the IDE controllers.
The resource tab doesn't show DMA enabled (no DMA channel specified). The
"Use automatic settings checkbox" is grayed out.

Two questions:

1. Is DMA really enabled but XP just doesn't indicate it?
2. If DMA is not enabled, how do I go about unchecking the "Use auto
settings" box and manually enable it?

Thanks.

Dave, don't know if this is actually causing your problem, but you need to
disable the pnp os option in your bios.
That was for older operating systems, by disabling it you let Windows XP
completely control assigning resources, etc.

Not so. PNP needs to be on for Windows to detect and assign resources.

Absolutely not, not in the bios.
If pnp os is on in the bios, then the bios is going to fight with the OS for
resources, it should be off to allow XP to assign everything.
It was true in the earlier days, ie win95, but not today.

I have installed and run both XP Home and XP Pro with this setting off in
the bios, since Dec of 01, and have no problems whatsoever.
