View Full Version : Explorer.exe malfunctions after SP2

I have an HP Pavilion desktop with XP Pro. After I install SP2, it takes
about 10 minutes to boot up. After boot up, explorer.exe crashes a lot.
When I double-click on My Computer it takes 5 minutes of the flashlight
before the C: drive etc. appears.

Bootup happens much faster if I turn off the Shell Hardware Detection
service, but then explorer.exe won't show any drive except the C: drive.

I've googled this problem, but none of the solutions I've found had any
effect.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips?

Thanks!

Please define "crashes a lot" a bit more precisely. If there are
error messages then please include the complete *verbatim* text of the
error message.

See http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm for additional suggestions as to
what information might assist us with diagnosing the cause of your
problem.

Also here is a web site with some tips specifically related to SP2:

Good luck

And with an attitude like yours it may be a long time before you get
any assistance from the volunteers who provide the assistance on these
newsgroups.

For boot up problems try some clean boot troubleshooting:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560

How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=316434

For the slow display when clicking My Computer try running the edit on
Kelly's site, line 157, "Prevent Automatic Folder and Icon Refresh":

See the top of the page for instructions.

If you're so smart, fix it yourself.
