View Full Version : "My Computer" stops responding after SP2

I've posted on this issue before, but now I've tried all the suggested tips.
I have an HP Pavilion 520n, with XP Pro. After I upgraded to SP2, the
computer takes 15 minutes to boot up. If I disable ShellHardwardDetection
service, it boots up more or less normally. But when I double-click on "My
Computer" I see the flashlight for about 3-5 minutes, then things appear
normally.
There are other symptoms as well. Some programs take minutes to start up.
The task list doesn't show anything going on during these wait periods.
I've used Shexview.exe to disable every non-Microsoft shell extention. No
difference.
I used MSCONFIG to turn off just about all of the start-up programs and
services that looked suspicious. Same behavior.
Help! What other techniques can I use to figure out what is causing this?
Thanks, ---Selden McCabe

I've got a similar problem - but it's limited to only the my computer screen.
Takes a seriously long time. I tried the Kelly solution with no help. Any
ideas? It's a Dell Inspirion working wirelessly.
