This can tell about SP-2:

You probably should install SP-2 largely for the increased security it
offers.
But their are other reasons mentioned on the link above.

The computer should be properly functioning and maintained before installing
SP-2.

Install SP2 and you will either have success or get a very frustrating and
quick lesson in what being 'very new to this' really means.....
I still believe it to be the proverbial 'crap-shoot'..... You could
alternately; download Firefox browser and make it your default, there is a
learning curve but you might enjoy it. Since Microsoft has the most popular
browser in IE 6, it is also the target for a plethora of problems.. Hence,
SP2 was born.. Best advice, since you admit to being new to all this; Read
and learn.. The Web has a great deal of information available and it is well
worth your time to educate yourself about security, alternative browsers
etc.
Since this is a Windowsxp. hardware group, (meaning NOT software) I won't go
into any further detail, not wishing to *iss-off any MSVVPPs.
