View Full Version : USB Mouse and System Freezes Intermittently

I recently purchased my new computer (self-built), and I
just installed a newly-purchased full version of WinXP
(which included SP1).

For background, I have a 2.4GHz Intel, 512MB Ram, 256MB
BFG (nVidia) video, Philips sound card, and Maxtor
60GBHD. My motherboard has the ability to run USB 2.0
(and 3 I guess?).

Anyway, after an easy format and installation of XP (no
problems), I attempt to download updates from
WindowsUpdate, and my mouse freezes. I can't get to
TaskMgr (or whatever you call the CTRL-ALT-DEL to see
processes, etc). My hard drive stops responding, and I
have to do a hard-reset.

This problem doesn't only occur in WindowsUpdate.
Sometimes my system freezes just as soon as I get to the
desktop, and other times it'll take a good 10 minutes
before it'll happen. Often it'll happen when I attempt to
browse the 'net.

I read a few different messages concerning similar
problems, and I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps it's the
USB mouse (just a basic 2-button logitec optical mouse).

Anyone that has (or had) the same problem that I'm
having: Please send an e-mail to .

Help! :)

First thing to do is reinstall or update the mouse driver.

Well, I downloaded the driver, installed it, but I think
it might be the driver for my motherboard. I honestly
thought an original install of XP (with SP1 included)
would automatically allow for plug-and-play of a USB
mouse...

The good news is, my machine doesn't seem to freeze
anymore, but it is still rather slow...especially when I
attempt to run WinUpdate. Takes a few minutes to initiate
the browser for Update.
