View Full Version : Weird XP SP2 problems

After installing XP SP2, I have the following situations...
1a) I click on Start...Search and I get nothing.
1b) I right click on My Computer and select "Find" and I get nothing.
2) Some website links that I click on do nothing. I also have Firefox
installed and the same links work perfectly. There is no Script error or
anything, they simply do not result in any action taken at all. They act as
if there is nothing to link to. These problems occur on verious websites and
normally are pointing to a java window.open or something similar. I even
tried "Open in New Window" with no success. Most links work fine. I have
changed internet security and advanced options to allow for the widest
possible range of restrictions, however, nothing makes any difference. I
have scanned my computer using the latest PC-cillin definitions file....still
nothing. Has anyone else had this experience besides me?
Please resond if you have experienced this and especially if you had any
success correcting it.

Check for spyware programs with:
AD Aware SE 1.05
Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.3
CWShredder
Spyware programs are not "true" viruses and some older anti-virus utilities
do not look for them.

Thanks for the reply and I can I understand why you made your suggestion,
however, I failed to mention that, as a regular process, I scan the PC with
the latest Adaware Se and a fully updated/purchased version of webroot Spy
Sweeper.
Any other ideas or comments are welcome.

Why doesn't Search work?

Thanks for the link, it's a great site, however, I do not think it addresses
my problem directly. One thing I did not mention is that hitting the F3 key
while in WINDOWS EXLORER successfully opens the search companion. It is the
only way I can search for files right now (which is not particularly
terrible.)
Things that don't function properly are
1) When I right click on My Computer and choose search or click START and
then Search, I get nothing.
2) Some valid internet explorer links do not function. (These are links
from major sites which work on other PCs and on this PC using Mozilla but not
on this PC using Internet Explorer). By the way...where did the "Repair
Internet Explorer" function go to that was available on other OS's?
