Programs hang after resuming from standby (XP Home SP2)

I have no problem entering standby mode, but recently any programs started
immediately after resuming from standby, will hang and not respond to the
mouse.

I cannot close the "not responding" programs from Task Manager, restart or
shutdown the machine from Task Manager, or from the Start button. The only
way to get out of the situation is to turn the machine off and back on again
via the power switch to restart. This doesn't happen every time after
standby, but when it matters most that it resumes properly!

Please has anyone a clue as to why this behaviour. Machine is as far as I
can tell free from viruses, spyware or trojans, and is scanned for these at
least every other day using most recent program updates.

Is this a desktop or a laptop? If a laptop, see if there are any
upgrades to the power management software on the laptop mftr.'s
website. If this is a desktop - did standby ever work correctly? If
yes, then what changed? If no, then there are desktops that just don't
do standby very well and it would be better to just turn the machine
off when you don't want to use it.

Machine is a desktop (Sony Vaio RD406). It's only since the SP2 upgrade that
I have really noticed the problem. All necessary driver and program uppdates
were carried out before SP2, and previously it always returned from standby
correctly. I have weeded out any unnecessary applications that run in the
background and the only thing different that I can think of is I now use ADSL
instead of dialup, but I have to re-connect that anyway after standby which I
normally do top check e-mails. It's usually OE that stops responding, but
once that has stopped responding, any other program opened behaves the same
way and then it's power off and back on to get the machine working again.

Since it is OE that usually stops responding, I'm guessing that the
problem occurs after you get online. Do you run any connection software
from your ISP? Perhaps that could be causing the problem.

So you did check on Sony's website for updates to any power management
programs they use (Sony makes *very* proprietary machines). Are there
any clues in Event Viewer (Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter])?

Anything on Sony's support site and/or user forums about this issue?

The machine is a Sony Vaio RS406 not RD406 (my typing!). I forgot to mention
that as my ADSL connection is via a USB modem, I use the program ADSL
Autoconnect. On checking the Event Viewer the Applications section only
shows an error where the Autoconnect first of all doesn't find a dial tone
and I presume this is because the USB system is still re-starting. In the
System listing the only error that appears is the one which says "The attempt
to power off HOME failed" and this occurs when I try to re-start the machine.

I have just had a look at Sony's support and update site and apparently
there is now a BIOS update listed which wasn't there last time I looked.
According to Sony, this BIOS Update fixes following issue :

- Improves the stability of the unit after resuming from hibernation or
stand-by.

I have now downloaded this and am about to update the BIOS as it seems
likely that this will correct the problem (fingers crossed I don't get a
power outage while I do it!).

So, here goes! I will let you know if it works.

Make sure you back up your current BIOS. Most BIOS flash programs have
the ability to do this. Make sure the laptop is plugged into an outlet
and not running on battery. It won't take but a few minutes and I'm
sure you'll be OK.

That BIOS update seems to have done the trick. I've done 3 standbys and 2
hibernates and all have recovered without a hitch.
